This article will cover a topic I never thought I’d have trouble with…and that is organization. Throughout my whole life I’ve been one that was fairly organized. However, in the past 6 months or so my collection of men’s accessories has grown exponentially. It grew so fast that I wasn’t anticipating or prepared how to respond to it. So today’s topic I’ll be speaking about organizing just my lapel pins. That may sound like a small segment of the whole problem I have but when you see my pictures in this article you will know why I started there. I will write subsequent articles about ties, suits, shirts, etc. to give you all ideas.
First off, my challenge with lapels was that all of the lapels were spread out in numerous boxes around my house. From my bedroom, office, and son’s room which made it very hard to find them. Secondly, the lapels were not organized when they were in the boxes. So if I was looking for a color, pattern, or style…good luck. I basically had to search every box until I found something I felt would work. Lastly, I needed a way to remember which lapels were from which company so I could appropriately tag them on my Instagram feed. Currently the only way I do it is by memory and that is getting worse instead of better.
For those of you who have a lot of accessories, whether it’s lapel pins, collar bars, pocket squares, bracelets, etc. Here are the steps I’d recommend to get a handle on how to organize them:
1. Get all of the accessories out and put them in one area
2. Spread out all of the items by color, pattern, company, or season (if appropriate)
3. Identify an organization system once the items have been organized in groups. This could be a Tupperware, shoebox, cardboard box, or anything you have around that is big enough to hold the items.
4. Once the items have been placed in the organization system lapel it appropriately. Use a permanent marker or label maker. Make sure that if you write, write large enough and clearly so it will last.
Here is the approach I took to organizing my lapels (just a snippet as an example).
My wife then bought me a Tupperware item at Lowe’s which is perfect for the size of lapel pins. From there I placed the lapel pins in each container by color. The red box was very full so I split that color into two instead of one like the rest. Here’s how it looks now.
What do you think of the result? I think it is pretty good. I know it will make my life easier. If you are looking for tips on how to organize shirts or ties, I will write an article in the future about them. I also I’m struggling with both really bad right now.
